AL to take month-long programme on 70th anniversary

The ruling Awami League (AL) will take a month-long countrywide programme from June 23 to celebrate the party’s 70th founding anniversary.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader said this at a press conference after a meeting with AL secretariat and central working committee members at AL president’s Dhanmondi political office here.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said a three-day programme will be arranged in capital Dhaka while meetings, seminars, processions, cultural functions, publication of souvenirs and essay competitions will be organized at district and upazila levels.

Founded on June 23 in 1949 as Awami Muslim League at the historic Rose Garden in Old Dhaka City, the party was later renamed as Awami League.

Quader said two elderly party leaders from each district will be accorded a reception in Dhaka on the occasion.

The AL general secretary said the month-long programme will begin with hoisting the national and party flags and releasing pigeons and paying homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his portrait in front of the party’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue on June 23.

On that day, a delegation of AL will place wreaths at the mausoleum of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj.

A discussion will be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on June 24. On June 25, a cultural function will be arranged at the party’s central office.

AL Presidium Member Begum Matia Chowdhury, Joint General Secretary Advocate Jahanagir Kabir Nanak, Organizing Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Relief and Social Welfare Minister Sujit Roy Nandi, Forest and Environment Secretary Delwar Hossain and Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, among others, were present on the occasion.
