Dhaka Takes Note of Beijing’s Absence over Myanmar Border Tensions Discussion

September 23 (ANI): In violation of diplomatic etiquette, Bangladesh has avoided discussions on Myanmar’s military activities along China’s border.

Dhaka did not take China’s non-response for granted. The Ministry of External Affairs says they have ‘noticed’ the issue. On the other hand, experts say they are not “surprised” by China’s stance on Myanmar, Bangladesh Live News reported.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the ambassadors and high commissioners of non-ASEAN countries working in Dhaka to inform them about Myanmar’s military activities along the border. However, Chinese ambassador Li Ji Ming did not participate in it.

The meeting was held on Tuesday morning at Rashtriya Guest House Padma. The ambassadors of Russia and India were not present but sent representatives. Bangladesh Live News reported that only China was absent.

In addition to the European Union member countries, representatives of almost all countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Egypt, South Korea, Turkey, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and Japan participated in the meeting.

Experts see China’s absence as a breach of diplomatic etiquette. At the same time, they consider this incident as China’s clear support to Myanmar, Bangladesh Live News said.

An official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who did not wish to be named, told NewsBangla that although the heads of missions of almost all countries were called at a very short notice, they or their representatives came.

He added, “However, we have not received any representative from China. The ambassador may be busy with important work, but he could have sent a representative if he wanted. We are a little surprised that he was not sent.”

Despite being part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and enjoying increased trade and investment, Bangladesh refuses to be China’s broker.

Furthermore, Bangladesh has been suffering from unethical behavior by Chinese companies as the country’s authorities have found many cases of tax evasion by Beijing-based companies or their affiliates in Dhaka.

Chinese companies doing business in Bangladesh are constantly involved in tax evasion and smuggling of items ranging from cigarettes to alcohol. Bangladesh Live News reported that the dishonest behavior of Chinese companies is causing huge damage to Bangladesh’s treasury. (ANI)
