Experts suggest ensuring safety of honey bees

Agriculture experts have suggested for taking effective measures to ensure safety of honey bees as they are taking important role in pollination besides producing honey.

The experts made the observation at a seminar held Tuesday at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) in the capital where the experts shared the initial findings of a study on pollinator safety and role of honey bees.

The study was carried out by the Entomology Division of the SAU with support of Syngenta Bangladesh Limited.

Under this study project, a field research work was done at Nagorpur Upazila of Tangail district on mustard crop from December 2016 to March this year to evaluate impact of honey bees as major pollinator on mustard yield and safety requirements to keep population of the honey bees high.

Two field trips were also organised engaging key stakeholders in the project area that followed by the seminar on pollinator safety for sharing key learning and identifying future working areas.

At the seminar, some agriculture experts observed that the bees were taking a major role in increased yield and quality of commercially grown crops. They said as beekeeping practices were gaining popularity across the country, proper utilisation of these managed bees would help to increase crop yield to attain food security.

Vice Chancellor of the SAU Professor Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council Dr Mohammod Jalal Uddin, Additional Director (crops) of the Department of Agriculture Extension Hanif Mohammad, Managing Director of Syngenta Bangladesh Sazzadul Hassan and Head of Sustainable Productivity for Syngenta South Asia Phadnis Chidambar participated in the seminar.

Dr Md Sakhawat Hossain of Entomology Department of the SAU presented the keynote paper at the seminar, presided by Director for Research of SAU Prof Dr Nazrul Islam.

Representatives from different government and non-government organisations took part in the event.
